Other items a Mori girl may have include lace collars, cardigans, knit wear, knee high socks, and loose fitting pants.  Mori girls wear many layers, such as a skirt under a dress, or a sweater or shirt over a dress, an each layer is partially visible.  This does not mean that Mori girls wear many items, though sometimes that is the case.  With so many layers to wear, it's best to not try this style on a very hot day.

The term 'Mori girl', also known as Forest Girl, is a fairly recent fashion aesthetic.  "Mori" in Japanese means "forest".  Originating in 2007, Mori girl has grown from a Japanese subculture to an international fashion movement.  The look is inspired by Hagu, a character from the movie Honey and Clover, played by the actress Yu Aoi.  The overall look is feminine and earthy.  The ultimate goal of a Mori girl goal is to look like a girl who lives in the forest.

Mori Girl Fashion Style

The Mori girl look is natural, but that doesn't necessarily mean simple.  Coordinating colors, layering fabrics, and picking the right accessories can be complex.  And, complex doesn't have to mean expensive.  Many Mori girl items can be found at thrift stores.

The primary colors a Mori girl wears are earth tones.  This includes:

  • Dark brown
  • Green
  • Burgundy
  • Dark blue
  • Ivory
  • Mustard yellow

Other colors can also be worn, such as soft pink, white, and even black, though black should be worn sparingly.  Instead of solid colors, fabric choices can be prints as well.  This includes floral patterns, stripes, polka dots, animal prints, vintage prints, and ombre colors, though really any pattern can have the Mori girl vibe.

A few must-haves for any Mori girl:

  • Loose fitting dress
  • Below the knee skirts
  • Poncho
  • Tights and leggings
  • Lace underdress
  • Long or oversized sweater
  • Scarves
  • Knit hats
  • Leather belts

Other items a Mori girl may have include lace collars, long necklaces, cardigans, knit wear, knee high socks, and loose fitting pants.  Mori girls wear many layers, such as a skirt under a dress, or a sweater or shirt over a dress, an each layer is partially visible.  This does not mean that Mori girls wear many items, though sometimes that is the case.  With so many layers to wear, it's best to not try this style on a very hot day.

Mori girl shoes should be comfortable:

  • Boots (Brown, tan, or black)
  • Moccassins
  • Mukluks
  • Flats

Mori girl hair styles tend to stay simple.  Long waves, short and straight, or something in between, it doesn't matter as long as the hair is natural, or at least looks natural.  Even up-do's are worn by Mori girls, who will usually still try to keep their hair as natural looking as possible.  This can be done by accessorizing.  Hair accessories are feminine and simple:

  • Hair bows
  • Floral halos
  • Antlers
  • Berries
  • Lace or ribbon

Mori girls don't need makeup as they prefer a natural look.  But, Mori girls who do wear makeup keep it simple, light, and not at all obvious:

  • Eye shadows in earth tones such as brown and tan
  • Mascara
  • Eyebrows can be shaped and thickened
  • A little blush

The most important thing for any Mori girl is to take care of her skin and her hair.

Mori Girl Lifestyle

Mori girl isn't just a look, it's a lifestyle.  Mori girls tend to have a subtle eccentricity that adds to their natural charms.  These girls tend to be shy and somewhat mysterious, with good manners.  A Mori girl also has an active imagination, a sense of modesty, and a love of life.  A Mori girl likes to be healthy, so taking walking through the woods is a perfect outdoor activity for any Mori girl.  These girls also love taking photos, so anyone who wants to be a Mori girl should be sure to carry her camera everywhere.  Since Mori girls care about the environment, someone who is interested in this lifestyle should recycle.  A great activity for a Mori girl is gardening, or growing plants either indoor or outdoors.  Other interests include sipping tea, knitting or crocheting, and perusing antique shops.  SPOON, Fudge, and Mori Girl Papier are photobooks/magazines that show the latest Mori girl fashions, but a Mori girl will read just about anything.
